Why a salt water chlorinator is the best choice for your spa or swimming pool

Popular in Australia and the USA, salt water sanitisation systems are the natural way to keep your spa or swimming pool water sparkling clear and fresh. Many people are turning to this natural way to keep a spa or swimming pool clean and healthy, rather than continuing to use harmful chemical products in their home pools.

The money saved on more harmful and expensive chemicals will pay for the unit over 2-3 years, whilst the health benefit to you and your loved ones is priceless.

There are a huge number of advantages to using a salt water chlorinator over chemicals in your spa. For a start, there is no longer any need to store packages of chlorine, shock treatments, or algaecides, which can be a safety hazard, especially for those with young children or pets. The lower level of chlorine and natural salt in the pool system keeps you free from sore eyes, irritated skin, and strong chlorine smells. The system is incredibly easy to operate and maintain.

A salt water chlorinator delivers pure, fresh water - without chemicals!

How a salt water chlorinator works

The first component is, of course, salt. The minimum level required to keep the pool clean is about 3000 parts per million of salt in the water. The salt must be kept above this level, otherwise chlorine production would simply stop.

The salt water chlorinator contains a salt cell, comprised of a series of plates with opposing electrical charges. Salt makes the water conductive so that electricity can pass between the plates in the salt cell. As the water passes between the plates, electrolysis takes place, causing a chemical reaction which releases chlorine from the salt.

The control unit is a device that sends power to the electrodes in the salt cell. The unit controls how much chlorine is produced by regulating how long the power is applied to the cell. If you turn the control knob down, then the unit might apply power to the salt cell only 25% of the time, thereby producing less chlorine. If you turn the control knob up, then the unit would apply power to the cell for a longer period of time. The control unit is able to sense the level of salt in the spa and will indicate when there is a need to add more salt.

These are just some of the immediate benefits a salt water treatment system provides:

  • No more packaged chlorine, shock treatments or algaecides

  • No more exposure to chlorine powders, liquid spills, dangerous storage, etc.

  • Crystal clear water, containing very low levels of natural salt, which looks and feels great

  • No more red eyes, green hair, dry irritated skin or smell of chlorine

  • Designed for easy inspection and cleaning. Backed by a 5-year limited warranty

  • No more worries about your children or pets getting into dangerous stored chlorine or bromine

Note: Sea water has approx 20,000ppm (parts per million) of salt content. Salt water chlorinators generate around 3000ppm, which generally cannot even be tasted. Any water containing under 6000ppm of salt is still classed as fresh water.
